International Women’s Day 2025 – Accelerate Action

by | Mar 4, 2025 | News | 0 comments

International Women’s Day happens every year on the 8th March to celebrate women’s success, challenge discrimination and share knowledge to move towards gender equality.

This year’s theme is #AccelerateAction, drawing attention to the urgency of making faster, more effective strides towards gender equality and how we can all take actions to positively impact women’s advancement.

We want to thank all the individuals, groups and businesses that are supporting Leeds Women’s Aid for International Women’s Day this year. From gigs and craft events to bikeathons, each activity raises vital funds and increases awareness of our work. Below is a summary of events, you can find more information on our Instagram post.

Team LWA

A group of local women activists got together to set up Leeds Women’s Aid in 1972, and since then, we have been accelerating action for women every day!

We want to use International Women’s Day as an opportunity to thank our amazing women of Leeds Women’s Aid for their dedication to providing life-changing support to our clients. Our employees, volunteers and trustees work tirelessly to accelerate action for women and families.

Our Support Services

We believe that women-centred support is powerful and improves the lives of women, men and children. We not only provide immediate support services to those experiencing domestic violence and abuse such as our 24hr helpline, online chat and emergency refuge accommodation, but we also provide informative services such as our Staying Safe Programme to build women’s confidence and self esteem and help safeguard them from getting into abusive relationships in the future.

In the Community

We are proud to be the largest women’s charitable organisation in Leeds and we have many valuable partnerships and connections throughout the city, which we use to raise awareness of domestic abuse and gender-based violence. In the past year, we launched our beer mats which can be found in various bars and pubs in Leeds, with the aim of starting conversations about safety and encourage those who need it to seek support.

We also regularly attend various community events, most recently focusing on the universities to promote healthy relationships amongst young people.
